A ossificação heterotópica é uma complicação freqüente após a lesão medular. Os avanços graduais no campo da fisiopatologia, reabilitação e novos métodos de tratamento são uma esperança para a reversão do quadro clínico do lesado medular num futuro próximo. O objetivo desse estudo é avaliar a resposta da ossificação heterotópica das articulações coxo femorais à estimulação elétrica neuromuscular em pacientes tetraplégicos após trauma raquimedular. Seis pacientes foram submetidos à estimulação elétrica neuromuscular por um período médio de 16,6 meses, sendo avaliados radiologicamente. Foi identificada a melhora radiológica em dois pacientes e a não progressão do quadro nos demais. A estimulação elétrica neuromuscular em lesados medulares pode ser um método válido no tratamento da ossificação heterotópica e prevenção de sua progressão.

Knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFOs) are prescribed to paraplegic patients with low level spinal cord injury and with good control of the trunk muscles. Three types of KAFOs were used in this work (plastic-metal, metal-metal and composite materials), the composite materials were depended on the number of perlon layers (13 layers & 9 layers) with one layer of carbon-fiber and (6 layers) without carbonfiber. The mechanical properties of most of the KAFOs' materials were tested by tensile test and fatigue machines.The data of gait cycle (Ground Reaction Force (GRF), and pressure distribution) were collected from one patient with poliomyelitis (wearing brace type KAFO) and one normal subject. In this paper, the FEM (ANSYS) was used to compute the safety factor of fatigue for all types of KAFOs' models and the equivalent stress (Von-Mises). The interface pressure between the patient's leg and the brace was tested by using a piezoelectric sensor.The results obtained from ANSYS gave the profile of safety factor of fatigue, for metal-metal KAFO (3.69), plastic-metal model (0.88). While, the (13) layers for composite material was about (1.4), but (1.07) & (0.41) for ( 9) layers and ( 6) layers, respectively. The value of safety factor increased with the composite material for the suggested design.

People with motor disabilities present diverse needs that the available products cannot fully addresses. Handbikes are human-powered vehicles that provide mechanical efficiency and can be used as a product for every day. The objective of this study is to understand how the design aspects of these vehicles have been investigated. As a methodology adopted, a systematic literature review was carried out, in order to find relevant scientific articles on the subject, and a prospective study, to verify the prospective scenario. For the selection criteria adopted, 21 scientific studies and 17 patents, none in Brazil, were found on the research platforms. These results demonstrate that there is potential to work with handbikes in the country due to the market gap.
