Tendency to Breast Cancer Screening Among Rural Women in Southern Iran: A Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) Analysis of Theory of Planned Behavior

Abstract: Background: Early detection of breast cancer is a crucial factor in surviving the disease. This study aimed to investigate the mammography screening based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) among rural women in Fasa and Shiraz cities, Iran. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study performed on 800 female clients referring to rural health centers in Fasa and Shiraz cities in southern Iran in early 2021. The authors decided to send and distribute the electronic questionnaire form through the WhatsApp … Show more

“…Using RMSEA (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation), AGFI (Adjusted Goodness-of-fit Index), GFI (Goodness-of-fit Index), CFI (Comparative Fit Index), NFI (Normed Fit Index), TLI (Tucker–Lewis Index), IFI (Incremental Fit Index), and SRMR (Standardized Root Mean Square Residual) to evaluate the fit of the model. The values of RMSEA should be lower than 0.08 [ 36 ], the values of AGFI, GFI, CFI, NFI, TLI, IFI should be higher than 0.9 [ 37 – 41 ], and the values of SRMR should be lower than 0.08 [ 42 ].…”

“…Health needs arise not only from actual physical and psychological inadequacies felt by an individual but also caused by their subjective perception. Theory of planned behaviour (TPB), one of the most frequently used approaches to explain health behaviour,7 14–16 considers internal perception from three interconnected perspectives—attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control 17. In addition, health needs also might be influenced by broader social and environmental stimuli 18.…”

“…Although changing unhealthy behavior is challenging, health-related educational methods based on the appropriate and well-known behavioral models/theories can help healthy or ill individuals to change their beliefs about a disease or preventive measures. [ 9 10 ] In this regard, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)is one of the best supported theoretical guidelines for anticipating human behavior, behavioral changes, or designing effective health interventions. [ 11 ] This social–psychological theory, introduced by Ajzen and Fishbein (1977),[ 12 ] emphasizes that behavioral intentions are the primary determinant of behavior, which could be affected by three independent constructs: perceived behavioral control (i.e., an individual’s perception concerning their capability to conduct a behavior), attitudes regarding the behavior, and subjective norms (i.e., social tension on individuals to accomplish or not to accomplish a specific behavior).…”
