Tensile Strength and Moisture Absorption of Sugar Palm-Polyvinyl Butyral Laminated Composites

Abstract: Natural fiber reinforced composites have had a great impact on the development of eco-friendly industrial products for several engineering applications. Sugar palm fiber (SPF) is one of the newly found natural fibers with limited experimental investigation. In the present work, sugar palm fiber was employed as the natural fiber reinforcement. The composites were hot compressed with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) to form the structure of laminated composites and then were subjected to tensile testing and moisture abso… Show more

“…Using epoxy resin as the matrix material for hybrid composite parts has been shown to increase their tensile, flexural, and impact strength significantly. Epoxy matrix also reduces composite part density by 3.12 percent, allowing for the production of lighter components [9][10][11]. Sui for aerospace applications, GFEC assessed for adhesive bonding strength exhibits high adhesion.…”

“…One of the important product extracted from sugar palm is its fiber, which is characterized a high resistance to sea water and durability, which has traditionally made it a main raw material in the ship ropes production, sugar palm fibers are also distinguished with relatively high tensile strength and thermal resistance, in addition to, that sugar palm fibers are effortless, as they do not need secondary processes, such as mechanical decorticating process to yield them or water retting [ 23 ]. One of the most important uses of sugar palm fibers is their employment as a reinforcement material for many polymers, as sugar palm fiber-reinforced polymer composites showed good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties in many studies that have been conducted on [ 21 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. As one of the most interesting composite materials reinforced with sugar palm fibers is the sugar palm fibers reinforced unsaturated polyester (SPF-UPE), on which several studies have been conducted regarding the evaluation of its physical and chemical properties [ 23 , 29 , 30 , 31 ].…”

“…The PVB owns excellent bonding strength, but water absorption of PVB will lead to less safety for laminated glass. 6,7 Under the action of ultraviolet light, the EVA material will turn yellow under long-term illumination, reducing the transmittance of laminated glass. 8 Polyurethane material is expected to be the preferred material for laminated glass.…”
