Terbutaline aerosol from a metered dose inhaler via a 750 ml spacer

Abstract: The effect on large and small airways of a pressurized terbutaline aerosol delivered via a 750 ml spacer, or via an ordinary actuator, was investigated in a double-blind study of 15 patients with reversible obstructive airflow disease. There was significant bronchodilatation with both devices as measured by Raw, FEV1.0, PEFR, MEF75, MEF50, and MEF25. Raw showed, a significant difference in favour of the 750 ml spacer. Measurement of Closing Volume (CV) revealed a significant decrease with the spacer, but with … Show more

“…In an outpatient study of patients with COPD, Pauwels et al 131 compared the use of an MDI and that of an MDI with a valved holding chamber following the inhalation of terbutaline, and reported that the MDI with holding chamber may be more effective than MDI alone. In an outpatient study of patients with asthma or COPD, Dorow and Hidinger et al 132 reported no differences between the use of an MDI and that of MDI with a valved holding chamber.…”

“…In two studies in children [9,10], the spacer produced significantly better re sults than an ordinary pressurized aerosol. In adults better results were obtained for parameters in small airways [7], Also, Lindgren et al [8] reported significantly better results with a spacer.…”
