Terpenoids from Elsholtzia Species; II. Constituents of Essential Oil from a New Chemotype ofElsholtzia cristata

Abstract: Capillary GC, GC-MS, (1)H-, and (13)C-NMR spectroscopy revealed that the essential oil of ELSHOLTZIA CRISTATA Willd. growing in the Kumaun region contains 88% dehydroelsholtzia ketone along with some minor acylfuran derivatives. This species with respect to its oil composition is unlike that which grows in Japan and Kashmir, and contains elsholtzia ketone as the main constituent.

“…The species is native to Asia and is an annual herb, reaching 40–60 cm in height with pilose, green, square stems; crenate‐serrate, ovate to elliptic‐lanceolate leaves and purplish flowers, located on spikes, blooming from July to October [16] . Phytochemical investigations revealed the composition of its essential oil, [17–27] but also the presence of flavonoids, [18,26,28] phenolic acids, [18] steroids and triterpenes, [15,29] of which phenolics are the most abundant non‐volatile compound class [18] . The pharmacological data mentioned in literature, including anti‐acetylcholinesterase activity, [28] anti‐oxidative properties, [30–32] antibacterial, [22,30] vasorelaxant, [18] anti‐leishmanial, [27] cytotoxic, [19] anti‐inflammatory, [32–34] and insecticidal activities [21] mainly refer to total extracts [30,31,33,34] and/or the essential oil [18,19,22,27] .…”
