Objective: Healthcare training has increasingly focused on interprofessional education (IPE) to provide students opportunities to gain competencies and learn accountability. IPE was incorporated into the curriculum by creating a course for all health science. Motivational interviewing (MI) training was added to enhance the IPE process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of MI training in patient counselling simulations. Methods: A cohort of students enrolled in an IPE course were evaluated on MI skills before and after receiving training. MI performance was coded using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) 4.2.1 scoring system. A student perception survey was also administered. Results: A total of 210 students were included in the study. Results from the MITI indicate an improvement in the four global ratings after MI training in individual and group cohorts. For example, for the Cultivating global score, 0% reached at least a fair benchmark in the pre-training groups while 90% (individual) and 50% (group) reached the benchmark post-training. Student perceptions of IPE improved following MI training with more students strongly agreeing that working together was better for patients post-training (66.2% vs 75.5%). Conclusion: The use of MI training in the setting of IPE setting appears to be beneficial. MI gives students a common language and approach to working with patients in an interprofessional setting.

This article delineates the proof-of-concept of virtual reality for interprofessional education in simulating obesity case management among healthcare profession students. Healthcare profession students, including dietetics, medical and nursing students in Universiti Putra Malaysia, will be recruited as a sample. This study starts with a workshop session on IP simulation-based obesity education and will be integrated into the virtual world (VW) online software. Students' knowledge and attitude will be assessed pre and post of the virtual IPE exposures. The developed obesity-simulated case would successfully lead to IPE implementation, and students who received virtual IPE would significantly have a better knowledge of obesity management and a positive attitude towards IPE. The virtual IPE would be a practical pedagogical approach to prepare the health profession students for a collaborative environment, improve technical skills, and strengthen soft skills such as communicating effectively.

Introduction Delivery of healthcare services makes up a complex system and it requires providers to be competent and to be able to integrate each of the institute of medicine’s (IOM) 5 core competencies into practice. However, healthcare providers are challenged with the task to be able to understand and apply the IOM core competencies into practice. Objective The purpose of the study was to examine the factors that influence health professional’s likelihood of accomplishing the IOM core competencies. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used to administer a validated online survey to health providers. This survey was distributed to physicians, nursing professionals, specialists, and allied healthcare professionals. The final sample included 3,940 participants who completed the survey. Results The study findings show that younger health professionals more consistently practice daily competencies than their older counterparts, especially in the use of evidence-based practice, informatics, and working in interdisciplinary teams. Less experienced health professionals more consistently applied quality improvement methods but less consistently used evidence-based practice compared to their more experienced counterparts. Conclusion There is a need to understand how health professionals’ age and experience impact their engagement with IOM’s core competencies. This study highlights the need for educational resources on the competencies to be tailored to health providers’ age and experience.
