Testicular cancer patients undergoing cisplatin based chemotherapy exhibit temporary olfactory threshold scores changes

Abstract: Testicular cancer is the most frequent malignant disease in young males between 15 and 35 years. Platinum based chemotherapy regimen is the therapy of choice in advanced disease. This treatment has also adverse effects caused by the cytostatic active substances, such as olfactory dysfunctions. The aim of this study was, therefore, to monitor olfactory function of testicular cancer patients during and 6 months after chemotherapy. A total of 17 patients (mean age 31.06 ± 10.26 years), which underwent chemotherap… Show more

“… 93 Diminished olfactory sensitivity has also been reported in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. 94 Changes induced by chemotherapy treatment are often transitory and recover within six months post-treatment. 93 , 94 Alterations in chemosensory function in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy can impact food preferences and practical and social aspects of everyday life.…”

“…The control procedures in the threshold experiment were designed to minimize olfactory cues for control mice as well as CYP-treated mice. In addition, olfaction may not play a salient role for CYP-treated mice ashuman and murine data suggest that there are also disruptions to olfaction during and after chemotherapy treatment (Joseph et al 2017;Walliczek-Dworschak et al 2017). CYP groups in both experiments may have also experienced xerostomia, a side effect of chemotherapy that has been shown to affect gustatory sensitivity (Pico et al 1998;Temmel et al 2005).…”

“…In a longitudinal study, Ijpma et al [24] showed decreased olfactory and gustatory sensitivities especially for salty taste in a group of 21 testicular cancer patients at their fourth cycle of cisplatin chemotherapy. Wallizcek-Dworschak et al [15] explored the influence of cisplatin on olfactory function and showed a significant decrease of olfactory threshold in a small group of 17 testicular cancer patients on day 90 of chemotherapy. In a longitudinal preliminary case-control study, Joussain et al [40] showed a decrease in the pleasantness and familiarity ratings of food odors in patients compared to controls after 2 cycles of chemotherapy.…”
