Testing antiplatelet and antioxidant activity of the extract of seven varieties of Allium cepa L.

Abstract: Open Life Sci. 2015; 10: 89-98 of thiosulfinate compounds and the most powerful antiplatelet effect, but a very small amount of flavonoids and an antioxidant effect almost nonexistent, in contrast with red variety of A. cepa which is the opposite. Conclusions/Significance: The white variety of A. cepa had very high anitiplatelet activity suggesting the potential use of A. cepa extract in treating cardiovascular diseases.

“…The interaction between inflammation, insulin resistance and atherogenesis represents a pathway for cardiovascular disease development [14,22]. The relationship between insulin resistance and inflammatory status seems to be bidirectional, inflammation leading to insulin resistance and insulin resistance further enhancing the pro-inflammatory state [24,26,31,32]. We found significant differences in the values of adhesion molecules in relation to HOMA quartiles (similarly to Hsu [31]) (for sICAM1 -difference between men and women p=0.038, but just for the upper quartile of HOMA; for sICAM1difference for men between values registered in the upper vs the lower quartile of HOMA p=0.002).…”

“…Saplonţai-Pop et al reported that A. cepa bulbs have antiplatelet activity. The activity test used platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is based on the kinetic curve of decreasing plasma OD [ 94 ], while the research conducted by Ko et al used the platelet aggregation turbidometric assay [ 95 ]. Hiyasat et al reported that A. ursinum leaf extract has antiplatelet activity.…”

“…However, its threshold levels vary widely; the cut-off values of HOMA-IR are usually defined by population-based percentile criteria. Moreover, these cut-off values are different depending on ethnicity, clinical methods of estimation, and metabolic conditions of the studied populations [18,19].…”
