Testing Biodegradable Films as Alternatives to Plastic-Film Mulching for Enhancing the Yield and Economic Benefits of Processed Tomato in Xinjiang Region

Abstract: The extensive application of plastic-film mulching (PFM) has brought a series of environmental pollution due to the lack of awareness of plastic-film rational use and absence of plastic residues recycling in China. In addition, the use of degradable film instead of common polyethylene plastic film (PE film) can effectively alleviate this situation. The substitution of PE film with biodegradable film in the agricultural production of processed tomato in Xinjiang region was investigated in this study. Using bare… Show more

“…The local climate type is a temperate continental climate, that is warm and rainy in summer, and cold and dry in winter [ 22 ]. The average annual temperature is 7 °C, the average annual precipitation is 280 mm, and the evaporation is 2730 mm [ 23 ]. Urumqi is an oasis city located in an arid region, and one of the most important rising cities in northwestern China and Central Asia [ 24 ].…”

“…Figure 5 shows characteristic peaks of the unmodified and modified straw fiber films. Both the unmodified and modified films displayed broad absorption peaks within 3680–3100 cm −1 , corresponding to the hydrogen-bonded O–H and N–H groups in their polymeric structures [ 44 , 45 ]. The bands observed at 2930–2910 cm −1 can be clearly ascribed to the characteristic peaks of C–H, confirming an increase in the number of methylene groups (–CH 2 –) due to the MUF prepolymer.…”

“…Film mulching technology has the advantages of increasing temperature and moisture; preventing plant diseases, insects and weeds; and promoting crop growth [1]. In 2019, the amount of plastic film used in China reached 1.379 × 10 6 t, and the area covered by plastic film reached 1.76281 × 10 7 hm 2 [2], which ranked first in the world.…”
