Testing of low-power wide-area technologies in controlled propagation environments

Abstract: In this study, the uplink performance of Sigfox and LoRa is evaluated in a controlled propagation environment (reverberation chamber). This evaluation is performed in terms of transfer error rate as a function of calibrated path loss, which allows a direct comparison of the performance of both systems under statistically similar propagation conditions. The analysis of the results shows that the proposed setup and testing methodology can be useful for comparing the many new wireless IoT technologies in a practi… Show more

“…In this case, CRs 4/8 and 4/5 were evaluated for SFs 7, 10 and 12. This LoRa test system was previously calibrated in [13] for the most robust LoRa configuration with CR 4/8 and SF 12, resulting in a maximum path loss (PL) of 155 dB for a minimum detected received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of -127 dBm and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of -20 dB.…”

“…INTRODUCTION the bit rate of a 100 Hz UNB signal is comparable to the speed at which the channel changes [66,67], meaning that multiple fading dips per packet are likely to happen. This phenomenon is commonly known as time-selective/fast fading, which severely degrades the received signal quality and, thereby, increases the probability of errors [38,[68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75]. To overcome this challenge, time diversity, frequency diversity, and macro-spatial diversity have been considered, e.g., in [43,58,[76][77][78].…”

“…Several fitting models, namely, (5.4)-(5.7), are required in case of developing a VIRC-based channel emulator that is capable of conducting OTA testing of wireless baseband algorithms, as, e.g., in [167,231,238,241,242]. In particular, the proposed models can be used to predict (through interpolation and-to a certain degree-extrapolation) the channel characteristics of the VIRC with a certain accuracy.…”
