Testing Taxonomic and Biogeographical Relationships in a Narrow Mediterranean Endemic Complex (Hippocrepis balearica) using RAPD Markers

Abstract: Analyses of RAPD profiles from 17 populations of the Hippocrepis balearica complex revealed a highly structured geographic pattern, not only among continental-insular areas but also within the eastern Balearic islands. In marked contrast to previous morphometric results, a clear separation between continental and insular samples was found, and intermediates between H. balearica and H. valentina samples were not detected. Molecular data indicated that western and eastern Balearic populations of the complex (H. … Show more

“…It is worth highlighting that the Balearic maritime juniper population is embedded within the continental populations, and no clear genetic isolation was detected with AFLP data. This spatial genetic pattern is not common, since many other Balearic populations of perennial plants are fairly genetic isolated from other island or continental populations (Rosselló et al 2002;Juan et al 2004;Rubio de Casas et al 2006). The data obtained might indicate that this is an example in which the biological features (e.g.…”

“…Bands showing the same gel mobility were assumed to be homologous, a rationale widely used in RAPD and ISSR studies (O'Hanlon and Peakall, 2000). Following the suggestions of Rosselló et al (2002), no attempts were made to code for band intensity. DNA bands showing quantitative variation in brightness were scored as present, regardless of the intensity, and absent if they were undetectable.…”

“…The genetic evolutionary processes of some endemic species of the Balearic Islands and species of the islands and Western Mediterranean mainland have been studied in order to elucidate the structure and genetic diversity of populations, and the gene flow among them (Affre et al, 1997;Sales et al, 2001;Roselló et al, 2002;Juan et al, 2004). As a general conclusion, it has been shown that genetic diversity is positively correlated to population size.…”
