Testing the convergent and discriminant validity of the Systemic Therapy Inventory of Change Initial scales

Abstract: The results supported the convergent and discriminant validity of the five scales of the STIC Initial. Clinical or methodological significance of this article: The clinical significance of this article is that it demonstrates that the STIC Initial should be useful for identifying treatment targets including both which systems, in addition to the facets within each system, that require targeting. The methodological significance is twofold. First, the use of CFA for testing convergent and discriminant validity i… Show more

“…Because this study is cross-sectional by making use of data before the first session only, the intersession data were not included. STIC has good internal reliability (Pinsof et al, 2009;Zinbarg et al, 2018;Zahl-Olsen et al, in review) with a Cronbach's alpha as high as 0.94 for the different subscales. The STIC consists of several subscales that further contain factors and items, and some of these address the topic for this study.…”

“…Nonetheless, high correlations between SDT-based subscales are not exceptional, especially for correlations between IM and IDEN, which are theoretically associated (e.g., Gagné et al, 2010; Tremblay et al, 2009). Scholars suggest that factorial correlations below .85 can be deemed distinct (Kenny, 2015; Zinbarg et al, 2018). Consequently, the CFA results confirm the five-dimensional MPSC construct proposed by Chen et al (2018).…”

“…According to (Cole, 1987), convergent validity refers to “a factor loading significantly greater than zero” (p. 593); discriminant validity is operationalized as “a correlation between factors significantly less than 1.0” (p. 593). CFA provides straightforward statistical tests for convergent and discriminant validity (Cole, 1987; Zinbarg et al, 2018). As demonstrated in Figure 2 and Table 3, all factor loadings are significantly greater than zero, and all standardized factor covariances are significantly less than 1.0 (90% CI considered).…”

“…The expert panels will give some feedback for improvement in the survey design. This second evaluation is based on convergent validity and discriminates validity (Meirte et al, 2017;Zinbarg et al, 2018). The Likert scales were applied for the validation process.…”
