Testing the Impact of Exports, Imports, and Trade Openness on Economic Growth in Namibia: Assessment Using the ARDL Cointegration Method

Abstract: This study examines the impact of exports, imports, and trade openness on Namibia’s economic growth using the ARDL cointegration method. The results reveal a significant negative relationship between imports and economic growth, while exports and trade openness show positive and significant relationships with economic growth. Moreover, short-term economic growth is driven by exports, imports, and trade openness. The findings suggest that trade liberalisation and export-led growth are crucial for Namibia’s econ… Show more

“…For example, the ARDL method does not limit variables to having the same integration order (Raihan et al 2023 ). Instead, it produces robust outcomes even if the variables are stationary at level I(0) or first difference I(1) or have a mixed order of integration (Sunde et al 2023 ). Moreover, the ARDL technique examines variables at different lag lengths, recognizing that the relationship between variables may not have the same lag structure.…”

“…Studies such as Kartikasari (2017), Uddin and Kahaman (2017), and Bakari and Krit (2017) reject the ILG hypothesis. Alternatively, imports may fail to stimulate economic growth (see Taghavi et al, 2012;Bakari and Mabrouki, 2016;Sunde et al, 2023). Makun (2018) recommends reducing imports and focusing on remittances and foreign direct investment.…”
