“…The fine splittings of both L 3 and L 2 arise from O 2p/Ni 3d interactions and the crystal field effect from the local ligand coordination environment. ,, It can be observed from Figure a that as the oxidation state increases from Ni 2+ , Ni 3+ to Ni 4+ , the Ni L 2 -edge resonance intensity of the reference spectra also increases because of the increased number of holes in the d-states (see Tables S1 and S2). In all these reference powders the Ni is octahedrally coordinated. , In an octahedral symmetry, the Ni 3d band separates into three lower energy orbitals (t 2g : d xy , d xz , and d yz ), and two higher energy orbitals (e g : d x 2 – y 2 and d z 2 ). The crystal field splitting and the energy position of the L-edge spectrum are affected by the number of unpaired 3d electrons, which defines the oxidation state.…”

“…Recently it has been shown (165) that the compound is diamagnetic, a result which supports the view that the nickel atom is quadrivalent. The isolation of a dark purple periodate of the formula Na(K)NiIC>6 xH20 has also been reported by P. Ray and C. Sarma (167,168). The small magnetic moment of this compound (1.1-1.3 Bohr magnetons) is attributed to a small amount of dissociation and it is claimed that the nickel atom is octahedrally coordinated to six oxygen atoms, some of which are shared between nickel atoms.…”
