Texture affects color emotion

Abstract: Several studies have recorded color emotions in subjects viewing uniform color (UC) samples. We conduct an experiment to measure and model how these color emotions change when texture is added to the color samples. Using a computer monitor, our subjects arrange samples along four scales: warm-cool, masculine-feminine, hard-soft, and heavy-light. Three sample types of increasing visual complexity are used: UC, grayscale textures, and color textures (CTs). To assess the intraobserver variability, the experiment … Show more

“…However, 'texture' itself plays a great importance in the distribution of images from 'hard' to 'soft'. This observation is in agreement with the results of Lucassen et al [2011] which reports the hard-soft scales independency of colour and its domi-nance by texture. Hence the parameters that bring texture to the fore, such as brushstrokes, complexity, composition become essential elements.…”

“…In addition, we use a study from the psychophysics literature that looked into the contribution of texture in the perception of different emotions about an image, including masculinity-femininity, heavinesslightness, and hardness-softness perception. In Lucassen et al [2011], synthetic and parameterized textures created with Perlin noise were used to conduct a user study. The authors created a model that maps the Perlin parameters of the image to the feeling it induces.…”

“…These emotions, i.e., arousal and valence were predicted successfully with 90% and 80% (Ding, Wang, Hu & Wang, 2008). Lucassen, Gevers and Gijsenij (2011) showed that texture has an important impact on colour response especially for hard-soft scale and works on decreasing weight for masculine-feminine, heavy-light, and warm-cool emotion scales (Lucassen, Gevers & Gijsenij, 2011). Adler (2017) indicated that previous research studies indicated that 'Hue' is described by the dominant wavelength affecting our emotions.…”
