Thalassemia and Nutritional Status in Children

Abstract: Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive single gene disorder due to an imbalance in the production of globin chains, namely α-globin and β-globin chains, which until now the case is increasing with manifestations of severe anemia and can have an impact on nutritional status. Malnutrition is one of the effects of thalassemia due to rapid erythrocyte turnover. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and provide information regarding the definition, epidemiology, classification, pathogenesis, diagnosis, complicatio… Show more

“…Moreover, the increased energy expenditure, where people with Betathalassemia Major have an increased energy expenditure due to the increased production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. This can result in a higher caloric requirement, which can be difficult to meet, especially if there is malabsorption (22,23).…”

“…Iron buildup can interfere with osteoid maturation and precipitate into hydroxyapatite crystals, disrupting normal bone metabolism (Moiz et al, 2018). In addition, malnutrition in thalassemia patients is caused by ineffective erythropoiesis; rapid turnover of erythrocytes also increases energy requirements (Ayukarningsih et al, 2022).…”
