Concrete linings failed before the acceptance of a railway tunnel in a north mountain area of China. A series of experiments were done to analyze the cause of this case. Thaumasite, ettringite, gypsum and calcite were found in the deteriorated concrete linings. The composition of on-situ soil and water samples were also analyzed. Though the sulfate concentration soil behind the linings are not very high, the underground water bring plenty of sulfate after its upsteam flow through a gypsum stratum. It is the external sulfate that induce the deterioration in a low temperature environment which is suitable for thaumasite formation.

Plaster, cement and concrete have been used since antiquity, notably by the Romans. Portland cement was patented by Joseph Aspdin of Leeds in 1824. Since then it has been gradually refined to become the fundamental constituent of modern concrete, familiar to all of us as the major construction material of the past century. Contemporary constructions such as skyscrapers, concert halls, suspension bridges and huge dams testify to the successful use of Portland cement concrete. For routine constructions its compressive strength development and durability are sufficiently well understood for it to be used with confidence in many diverse situations and in locations with widely different climate conditions. Even in the last 30 years, however, unexpected durability problems, such as the alkali silica reaction (ASR), delayed ettringite formation (DEF) and the thaumasite form of sulphate attack (TSA), have emerged. To ensure that the civil engineer can take the necessary steps to avoid their occurrence has required the methods of materials science to be applied to understand the mechanism of these processes. Recent ideas pertaining to the reaction mechanisms underlying DEF and TSA are critically reviewed.

The sulfate corrosion resistance of concrete admixed with fly ash was tested. Specimens were completely immersed in sulfate solution which was aimed at simulating the real corrosion environment. The compressive strength of fresh concrete specimens and precast concrete specimens in different corrosion age and corrosion environment was measured when the mixing amount of fly ash is 0%, 20% and 40%. The evaluation index is corrosion resistance coefficient of compressive strength Kf . The test results indicate that the sulfate corrosion resistance of fresh concrete is better than that of precast concrete during experimental period of 270 days; the sulfate corrosion resistance of fresh concrete can be improved by mixing a certain amount of fly ash.
