The Aberdeen Trauma Screening Index: an instrument to predict post-accident psychopathology

Abstract: The ATSI can accurately identify those most at risk of developing psychopathology 3-months post-accident in a sample of accidentally injured adult subjects recruited as consecutive admissions to an urban hospital in the North East of Scotland. However, to establish the generalizability of these findings, it is important that the ATSI be validated in both similar and diverse populations.

“…Furthermore, it is not clear how strong these risk factors are and whether it would be possible to put together a PTSD risk profile that could accurately place individuals within a spectrum of risk for psychiatric disorders following traumatic injury. One research team has begun to assign post-accident psychopathology risk scores to traumatized subjects, and this promising line of research should be further evaluated (Klein et al, 2002).…”

“…As the nonselective implementation of intervention is neither cost-effective nor efficient, 38 the evaluation of early prophylactic interventions would also be advanced if there were available a brief but valid and reliable method of identifying those at risk. 39 …”

“…Prevention of trauma sequelae is highly desirable. As the authors [Klein et al, 2002] of this study point out, however, no single traumatic event is guaranteed to trigger psychopathological reaction in all those exposed to this traumatic event. Prevention and early intervention are used non-selectively as it is not clear who among the injured is at risk to develop posttraumatic psychopathology.…”

“…This article describes the development of a simple and brief screening tool, The Aberdeen Trauma Screening Index (ATSI) [Klein et al, 2002]. The authors studied 150 victims of accidental injury (31% 5 motor vehicle accidents, 22% 5 falls, 21% 5 industrial, 21% 5 sports, and 5% 5 other accidents) consecutively admitted to the Orthopaedic Trauma Unit and the Accident and Emergency Department of the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, Scotland.…”
