The Ability of Conditioned Media From Stem Cells to Repair Vocal Fold Injuries

Abstract: Objective This study investigated the ability of hypoxia‐induced 25‐fold concentrated conditioned media (hCM) from human nasal inferior turbinate‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (hTMSC) to repair injured vocal folds during the early phase of the wound‐healing process. Methods The vocal fold was injured in Sprague‐Dawley rats. Next, hCM from hTMSC (the hCM group) or hTMSC (the hTMSC group) were injected into the injured vocal folds. As a control, saline (the phosphate‐buffered saline group) or 25‐fold concentrat… Show more

“…The exact composition of the CM can be influenced and selected to best suit the tissue characteristics that are desired. Kim et al used CM harvested from human inferior turbinate stem cells cultured under hypoxic conditions to simulate stress, and injected it into injured rat VF [26,27 ▪▪ ]. The rats receiving CM showed the greatest concentration of HA and least collagen in the VF [26].…”

“…Vocal fibroblasts are important for maintaining the homeostasis of the vocal fold and modify the extracellular matrix when the vocal fold is inflamed or injured by producing various materials in the larynx [ 16 20 ]. Therefore, exposing vocal fibroblasts to PM may provide basic information to understand the relationship between PM and laryngitis.…”
