Social media platforms focused on wildlife photography have become valuable ecological data sources through citizen science. In this study, we utilized photos shared by citizens on iNaturalist and WikiAves to analyse the interactions of the Red‐bellied Macaw (Orthopsittaca manilatus Boddaert, 1783) with its food plants. Despite being recognized as specialists in Mauritia flexuosa L.f. palm fruits, our findings suggest some flexibility in the foraging behaviour of the macaws. The photos indicate that palm fruits are an essential food source (20 taxa; highlight the native species M. flexuosa, Euterpe spp., Elaeis oleifera, and Syagrus spp.) in the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. It also confirms the predominance of M. flexuosa ripe pulp fruits in their diet, encompassing 45.2% of the 414 analysed photographs. The results highlight the potential role of the Red‐bellied Macaw in seed dispersal (stomatochory) for various palm species and reveal the consumption of new food sources such as flowers (present in 8% of photos) and alien plants, including the fruits of cultivated Livistona chinensis (Jacq.) R. Br. Ex Mart. palm (10.9%). Our photo analysis provided a comprehensive overview of Red‐bellied Macaws feeding in diverse localities (141 municipalities in 15 Brazilian states) and at different times. As a result, there is a consistent seasonal variation in foraging in the strongly seasonal Cerrado biome, for example, feeding on alien‐cultivated palm fruits in urban areas during the driest period, particularly L. chinensis. Through this photographic approach, we expanded knowledge of the macaw's food plants by 85.7%, now encompassing 26 species compared to the initial 14 documented species. This study underscores the relevance of citizen science in obtaining novel dietary data and deepening our understanding of ecological patterns in specialized species, emphasizing the significance of considerate plant‐bird relationships to support conservation efforts.

Los cambios climáticos que se han producido en las últimas décadas han influenciado en las tendencias y fluctuaciones poblacionales de muchas especies amazónicas, incluyendo los guacamayos. Entre 2006 y 2015, se cuantificaron guacamayos en la cuenca media del río Samiria en Perú. Los conteos por puntos distribuidos a lo largo de ocho transectos acuáticos en los sectores de Tacshacocha y Huishtococha se aplicaron durante los períodos de creciente y vaciante del río, para determinar la abundancia de guacamayos y los posibles cambios debido a eventos climáticos. Un total de 4225 pseudoréplicas en 72 estaciones de puntos de conteo resultaron en 65 149 avistamientos de guacamayos. Registramos cinco especies: Orthopsittaca manilatus, Ara ararauna, Ara severus, Ara chloropterus y Ara macao. Los resultados mostraron una alta consistencia durante los diez años, siendo O. manilatus la especie más abundante y, A. chloropterus y A. macao, entre las especies más raras; ambos grupos muestran diferencias entre Tacshacocha y Huishtococha. La población de los guacamayos fluctuó a lo largo de los años. Las especies A. ararauna, A. severus y A. macao, tuvieron una disminución en sus poblaciones, sin embargo, esta tendencia no fue significativa y sus poblaciones se han mantenido estables durante la última década. Orthopsittaca manilatus y A. chloropterus fueron las únicas especies cuyas poblaciones han aumentado en comparación con las evidencias de clima seco generadas en el 2010, debido a la estacionalidad de los niveles de agua de los ríos Marañón y Amazonas.

Moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa Linn f. [Arecaceae]) is a dominant species in the savanna margins of the Caribbean island of Trinidad. The savanna margins are frequently subjected to fires and the moriche palm, like many palm species, is adapted to cope with a degree of fire damage. These palms also frequently host large termite nests that tend to burn during fires, which causes further damage to the palm stems. This paper explores the possibility that the combination of termite nests and frequent fires can increase tree mortality. Two post-fire surveys were conducted to record, evidence of fire exposure, fire damage to termite nests and fire damage to palm stems. In both surveys, the majority of palms with termite nests suffered fire damage to their stems, while none of the termite-free palms showed damage. Furthermore, a comparison of nest size and damage to the bark showed stems with larger nests had significantly more damage than those with smaller or no nests. The results suggest that the presence of termite nests increases the extent of fire damage to palm trunks by providing a point of combustion that focuses flames on the already compromised stem tissue. Long-term studies are warranted to investigate the impact of repeated fires on wild arborescent palm populations.
