The accuracy and reliability of the Suchey–Brooks pubic symphysis age estimation method: Systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Suchey–Brooks method has been studied many times with varying reports of accuracy and reliability. A systematic review and meta‐analyses were utilized to quantitatively determine the accuracy and reliability of the Suchey–Brooks (S‐B) method. A systematic search of PubMed and EBSCO health and medical databases was performed. Meta‐analyses were performed to quantify the relationship between actual known age at death and the S‐B method using Spearman's Rho and Pearson's r for (1) combined males and females estim… Show more

“…Although accuracy is measured differently (as correlation coefficients) in Schanandore et al. 's [32] meta‐analysis of the Suchey‐Brooks method, their results are still comparable in that both the present study and theirs find that Brooks and Suchey [22] outperform the auricular surface and ribs. Notably, they also found sex differences, with males having slightly greater correlation coefficients than females, translating to greater accuracy in males.…”

“…Previously undertaken systematic reviews and meta-analyses with the Suchey–Brooks method validate this hypothesis. 86,87 However, targeted research studies investigating the applicability of the Suchey–Brooks method for ageing an Indian population are unreported. It is this lacuna that the present study purports to fill.…”

“…By quantitatively examining heterogeneity, it can be determined where uncertainty remains on a research question [43,44]. This approach that critically appraises results of multiple studies has previously been effectively used in anthropological studies [45][46][47] and has been employed in the present study.…”
