The accuracy of patients’ perceptions of the risks associated with localised prostate cancer treatments

Abstract: Prior to choosing treatment, most patients with prostate cancer poorly understood the differences in treatment risks. Greater efforts should be made to better understand why these misperceptions occur and, most importantly, how they can be corrected.

“…However, insights from health communication research suggest that individualized information is more likely to be considered as personally relevant (and hence, to be read) compared to generic and static information [20,21] This in-depth processing of information can lead to higher levels of engagement, which potentially encourages patients to actively participate in SDM [50]. Recent technological developments in data science and artificial intelligence offer promise for the generation of individualized risks and benefits of treatment options, and future studies should determine whether this personalized approach of DAs would also lead to improvements in LPC patients' understanding of risks [51,52].…”

“…There was a nearly similar study, but it was conducted among different populations, e.g., patients with localized prostate cancer. 25 The study assessed the risk perception to develop ED due to various prostate cancer treatments. An inaccurate perception of susceptibility was found to be expected, which was thought to be due to the lack of information provided during counseling.…”

“…All of this can be extraordinarily difficult for patients to grasp and navigate, particularly in the face of multiple and often mutually exclusive treatment options. 12 Furthermore, while patient-centred risk stratification aims to tailor treatment options to patient characteristics, aspects of patients' lives well beyond observable 'risk factors' can be critically relevant. Importantly, men with low-risk PCa (which may never be life-threatening) can be told that they have cancer which does not require immediate treatment.…”
