“…NK cell activity was significantly increased by this beta glucan in patients with Leishmania amazonensis infection ( 50 ). This beta glucan had regulatory or enhancing properties on poultry non-specific cellular immunity in a study on Peking ducks ( 51 ) and may enhance the immune response to avian influenza A H5 vaccine ( 52 ). This AFO-202 beta glucan increased the NK cell and macrophage counts in cancer patients and elderly patients ( 53 ).…”

“…β-glucans are structural components of cell walls in many different sources including bacteria, fungi, yeast, and algae. Some β-glucans have been shown to improve gut health ( Shao et al., 2013 ) in poultry subjected to a bacterial challenge, to increase macrophage function ( Qureshi, 2003 ), to increase antibody titers after a vaccination ( Le et al., 2011 ), and to function as an anti-inflammatory immunomodulator ( Cox et al., 2010a ). However, molecular weight and branching degree can influence the immune response of β-glucan via the production of cytokines and the enhancement of phagocytic activity and antibactericidal activity.…”

“…The immuno-modulatory process initiates when the βglucan binds to cell surface receptors of macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils (Chen and Seviour, 2007;Guo et al, 2003). β-glucan activates B-lymphocytes and macrophages through dectin-1, CR3, lactosylceramide, scavenger receptors and Toll-like receptors (Le et al, 2011;Taylor et al, 2002), modulating the immune system and inducing the production of cytokines (Cheng et al, 2004).…”

“…In broilers, β-glucan has been shown to be an excellent adjuvant for the avian influenza H5 subtype vaccine, enhancing the vaccine immunogenicity (Le et al, 2011). Mannan-oligosaccharide-bound pathogens were prevented from attaching to intestinal mannose residues (Spring et al, 2000), and mannose blocked the colonization of intestinal pathogens, such as Salmonella spp.…”
