The Adoption and Diffusion of Wearables

Abstract: Although the sales of wearables are increasing in the last few years, it is still unknown how wearables are actually adopted and being used in everyday life by consumers. In this study, we try to identify the adoption and diffusion patterns of wearables by performing a sentiment analysis on 97 semi-structured interviews with wearables owners / users focused on relevance and requirements of and resources and resistance related to wearables. Based on this analysis we conclude that developers and manufacturers of… Show more

“…Computationally augmenting the body is a popular interdisciplinary domain of research within the field of human computer interaction because on-body embedded systems provide immediate, convenient access to information and services. Early successes of the ubiquitous computing movement imbued daily wearable garments with computation such as smartwatches and headphones [6].…”

“…The value of this study is in its focus on factors that contribute to the long-term use of wearable activity trackers among older adults, explored through the theoretical framework of habit formation. Numerous studies have focused on the initial stages of health-related technology use [19,49,50], often neglecting the issue of long-term, sustainable engagement. Existing studies examining the continued use of wearable activity trackers and other personal informatics devices primarily focus on reasons for abandonment rather than long-term use strategies [21][22][23].…”

“…Despite the increasing interest toward wearables, skepticism is still expressed about whether wearables will ever meet expectations and be adopted by consumers on a large scale (e.g., [7]). Despite optimistic predictions about the explosive increase of demand in wearable technology, growth in the market has instead come at a slower pace [8]. Just as the introduction of smart watches and fitness trackers expanded the market and drove consumer demand in the past, the market for wearables still relies on companies to unlock consumer demand with innovative products.…”
