Abstract: In the aftermath of World War II, several influences were paramount in forcing academic psychology to recognize, albeit reluctantly, the coming professionalization of psychology. The federal government, wishing to avoid a repeat of blunders following World War I that led to significant dissatisfaction among veterans, took proactive steps to ensure that mental health needs of the new veterans would be met. The USPHS and the VA were mandated to expand significantly the pool of mental health practitioners, a dire… Show more

“…As early as 1949, doctoral training standards for 'scientist-practitioners' were suggested in an attempt to integrate psychological research and practice (Baker and Benjamin, 2000;Horn et al, 2007). With government support, the Boulder Conference on Graduate Education in Clinical Psychology was held in 1949 on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder.…”

Recognizing the immediate mental health needs of returned veterans and the shortage of mental health providers, the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and the Veteran's Administration (VA) partnered with the American Psychological Association (APA) to assist in detailing how more psychologists could be trained (Baker & Benjamin, 2000). With strong government support, leaders in psychology developed a more defined program of doctoral training as well as accredited doctoral internships.…”
