The aims and accomplishments of comparative psychology

Abstract: Greenberg, Partridge, Weiss, and Pisula propose a new perspective of comparative psychology, based in large part on an anagenetic and dynamic systems approach to the development and evolution of behavior. Their view appreciates the probabilistic nature of behavioral development and promotes the value of an integrative levels concept for generating testable hypothesis regarding the complex relationship between biology, context, and developmental history underlying behavioral and psychological functioning. Howev… Show more

“…The current study expands on these previous studies and examines both turning bias and footedness in three related bird species. Oppenheim (1972Oppenheim ( , 1973 adopted such a comparative approach to studying the basic pattern of hatching behavior and following his example makes sense in this instance (see Gottlieb & Lickliter, 2004;Lickliter, 2004;Tolman, 1987 for discussions of the value of a comparative approach to behavioral studies). Therefore, the present study examined the hypothesis that the asymmetrical behavior sequence of the last stage of the multiday hatching process provides a canalizing influence on the development of individual lateral bias in postnatal motor behavior.…”

“…At the first session of the seminar, I described the course objectives and we discussed the primary article 2004) and each assigned one of the follow-up commentaries (Denenberg, 2004;Lickliter, 2004;Moore, 2004) 3 Behavior, Genetics, and the Central Nervous System Blakemore & Cooper(1970); Hotta & Benzer (1972) (Tinbergen, 1963) that would provide the basis for integrating the biopsychology course and the seminar. The remaining weekly meetings were divided into modules and included readings corresponding to weekly topics covered in the biopsychology course.…”

“…The identity of a science is dependent on its ideological recognition by the scientific community, by the academy and by society. When the status of comparative psychology is compared with related disciplines, the possible need for a redefinition of comparative psychology is clear (Greenberg, Partridge, Weiss & Pisula, 2004;Lickliter, 2004).…”
