The early reviews of this ternary system by [1993Suz] and [1995Vil] presented a liquidus projection, several isothermal and vertical sections. An update by [2006Rag] included three isothermal sections at 1100, 1000 and 850°C as determined by [1998Kai]. Recently, [2011Bal1] and carried out a detailed investigation of the phase equilibria in the Al-rich region and reported seven isothermal sections in the temperature range of 1100-620°C, depicting new ternary phases.
Binary SystemsThe Al-Mn phase diagram depicts the following intermediate phases [2011Bal2]: Al 12 Mn (Al 12 W-type cubic), Al 6 Mn (Al 6 Mn-type orthorhombic), kAl 4 Mn (hexagonal, space group P6 3 /m), lAl 4 Mn (hexagonal, P6 3 /mmc), Al 11 Mn 4 (HT) (labeled T; Al 3 Mn-type orthorhombic), Al 11 Mn 4 (LT) (Al 11 Mn 4 -type triclinic), Al 8 Mn 5 (Al 8 Cr 5 -type rhombohedral), c 1 (h-Al 8 Cr 5 -type cubic), c 2 (r-Al 8 Cr 5 -type rhombohedral) and e (55-72 at.% Mn; cph). The Al-Ni phase diagram [Massalski2] shows five intermediate phases: NiAl 3 (D0 11 , Fe 3 C-type orthorhombic), Ni 2 Al 3 (denoted d; D5 13 -type hexagonal), NiAl (B2, CsCl-type cubic; denoted b), Ni 5 Al 3 (Ga 3 Pt 5 -type orthorhombic) and Ni 3 Al (L1 2 , AuCu 3 -type cubic; denoted c¢). The Mn-Ni phase diagram [2005Guo] depicts the following intermediate phases: MnNi (HT) (denoted aMnNi by [2005Guo]) has the B2, CsCl-type cubic structure. MnNi (LT) (denoted bMnNi by [2005Guo]) has the L1 0, AuCu-type tetragonal structure. Two other Mn-rich compounds are known: MnNi 2 and MnNi 3 (L1 2 , AuCu 3 -type cubic).
Ternary PhasesThree stable ternary phases are present in this system [2011Bal1, 2011Bal2]. The structural details of these phases are listed in Table 1. The u phase with a range of homogeneity is Co 2 Al 5 -type hexagonal. The j phase (also denoted f) is j-Al 14.4 Cr 3.4 Ni 1.3 -type hexagonal. The O phase (also denoted C 3.1 ), with a small homogeneity region around Al 78.5 Mn 13 Ni 8.5 , is O-Al 77 Cr 14 Pd 9 -type orthorhombic.Apart from these, three metastable phases are known [2011Bal2]. The decagonal D 3 phase (sometimes denoted T 3 ) has a periodicity of $1.24 nm. It was found around the composition Al 80 Mn 14.7 Ni 5.3 in rapidly-solidified or as-cast alloys . A second metastable phase $Al 82.5 Mn 2.8 Ni 14.7 found in as-cast samples by has the Al 9 Co 2 -type of monoclinic structure, with lattice parameters a = 0.8585 nm, b = 0.6269 nm, c = 0.6205 nm and b =95.34°. The third metastable phase (labeled O 1 ) has base-centered orthorhombic symmetry, with a $ 23.8 nm, b $ 12.4 nm and c $ 32.2 nm. The previously reported R phase (also called X phase) was not found by .
Isothermal SectionsWith starting metals of 99.999% Al, 99.99% Mn and 99.99% Ni, [2011Bal2] levitation induction melted a number of alloys. The alloys were annealed in the range of 1000-620°C for 64-958 h and quenched in water. The phase equilibria were studied with scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive x-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray powder diffraction and differ...
