The Alleviative Effect of Vitamin B2 on Potassium Bromate-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Male Rats

Abstract: Potassium bromate (PB) is a food enhancer, water disinfection by-product, and a proven carcinogen. It elicits toxicities in the living organism due to exposure and in a dose-dependent manner. The present study discourses the ameliorative efficacy of riboflavin (RF) in PB-administered rodents. The animals were distributed into five treatment groups: control (group I), PB alone (group II, 150 mg/kg), RF alone (group III, 2 mg/kg), PB+RF1 (group IV, 150 mg/kg+2 mg/kg), and PB+RF2 (group V, 150 mg/kg+4 mg/kg). “…So, the elevation of liver enzymes activities may be due to the failure of parenchymal cells of the liver under pathological conditions to ensure the vital functions, causing distribution of metabolism. As, it was shown that KBrO 3 can induce hepatic impairment 45 . Herein, we found that VE treatment together with KBrO 3 alleviated the elevated activities of the markers of hepatocellular injury AST, ALT and ALP comparing with KBrO 3 treated rats.…”

“…Similar results were obtained in a study by Hassan et al [31] where rats given potassium bromate displayed elevated ALT, AST, and ALP activity. Numerous risk factors, such as potassium bromate, alcohol, environmental contaminants, and medications cause oxidative stress on liver cells [25,32]. The use of natural antioxidants found in medicinal plants has the power to scavenge free radicals created by oxidative stress, hence lessening liver damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) [32].…”

The use of natural antioxidants found in medicinal plants has the power to scavenge free radicals created by oxidative stress, hence lessening liver damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) [32]. One of these therapeutic plants with antioxidant properties is Parkia biglobosa, which is an everyday diet in Africa [16,33].…”

“…The blood and liver tissue samples were prepared after sacrificing, as previously reported [32,33]. The serum samples were retrieved by centrifuging at 1000× g while the supernatants from tissue samples were retrieved from 3000× g. The samples were kept at −80 • C (Eppendorff, Stevenage, UK) till further analysis [30].…”
