The ALMA-ALPINE [CII] survey

Abstract: Star-forming galaxies are composed of various types of galaxies. However, the luminosity functions at z 4 -5 suggest that most galaxies have a relatively low stellar mass (log M star ∼ 10) and a low dust attenuation (A FUV ∼ 1.0). The physical properties of these objects are quite homogeneous. We used an approach where we combined their rest-frame far-infrared and submillimeter emissions and utilized the universe and the redshift as a spectrograph to increase the amount of information in a collective way. “…Yellow points correspond to the CANDELS catalog. Purple pointing-down triangles depict ALMA-detected galaxies (Scoville et al 2016;Bowler et al 2018;Tadaki et al 2020;Burgarella et al 2022;Schouws et al 2022). Orange crosses show near-IR-faint, mid-IR-bright sources (i.e., red galaxies) discovered in the Spitzer/HST era (Huang et al 2011;Wang et al 2016;Alcalde Pampliega et al 2019).…”

“…Most notably we do not account for dust extinction. Recent ALMA surveys report the existence of a substantial amount of dust in star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 6−8 (Fudamoto et al 2020;Burgarella et al 2022;Bakx et al 2021;Schouws et al 2022;Tamura et al 2019;Inami et al 2022). Given the importance of emission line ratios including [Oiii] 5007 Å, accurate modeling of dust extinction may be needed for future studies.…”

“…Most notably, weonly account for simplified dust extinction.
