The Alteration of Brain Interstitial Fluid Drainage with Myelination Development

Abstract: The integrity of myelination is crucial for maintaining brain interstitial fluid (ISF) drainage in adults; however, the mechanism of ISF drainage with immature myelin in the developing brain remains unknown. In the present study, the ISF drainage from the caudate nucleus (Cn) to the ipsilateral cortex was studied at different developmental stages of the rat brain (P 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 10-80). The results show that the traced ISF drained to the cortex from Cn and to the thalamus in an opposite direction be… Show more

“…In areas affected by stroke, remyelination is important in the process of functional recovery (Park et al, 2022). Intact myelin can serve as a barrier structure for ISF drainage, which is beneficial for the development of cognitive and motor or sensory abilities of the brain (Wang et al, 2021). This may explain why the association between the ipsilateral DTI-ALPS index and the contralateral CST in our study may be related to CST axonal remodeling and the clearance function of the glymphatic system.…”

“…Five rats were randomly selected from Sham group and SAH group respectively (n = 5) for these experiments. The MRI tracer Gd-DTPA is impermeable to the neuronal membrane and evenly distributed within ISF, and had been demonstrated as a good indicator for ISF drainage [ 32 ]. In this study, Gd-DTPA was diluted to 10 mmol/L in normal saline solution and injected into the frontal cortex of rats.…”

“…The MWM test was conducted to assess spatial learning and memory capability of rats in the Con 7 and EAI 7 groups as previously described [13,22]. On day 1, rats were pretrained to find a visual platform, which was 1 cm above the surface of the water, to adapt to the test procedure.…”
