The ambience of collaboration in coworking environments

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to take an explanatory role and analyse the development of workspace ambiences in coworking spaces which optimise the chance of interactivity between individual users and leading towards cooperation. The paper thus offers a discussion on how the ambience that is tailored to a particular coworking space enhances the possibility of collaboration between two or more users of a selected workspace. “…Co-working provides the contact and the potential for inclusion via the acceptance and proactive support provided by the co-working community. This is where events, community managers (also known as coordinators or hosts) can play a critical role (Capdevila, 2019;Orel, 2019;Orel and Alonso Almeida, 2019;Roth et al, 2019;Walden, 2019). This also fits with Jansen et al's (2014, p. 370) argument that "in the process of inclusion, it is the group rather than the individual that has primary agency" This is also in line with Shore et al's (2011) argument that belongingness is characterised by acceptance by others and interpersonal relationships.…”

“…The latter can be a product of spontaneous or mediated interactions. However, these interactions are moderated either through direct interventions by community managers, coworking space employees who deploy selected strategies to deploy social capital formation (Cabral and Winden 2016 ), or indirectly using workspace setting and its spatial comfortability (Orel and Almeida 2019 ).…”

“…To ensure ideal conditions for both the interaction and the transfer of knowledge to commence, the community manager needs to identify the individuals’ needs for comfort (Orel and Almeida 2019 ) and forge a culture of collaborative interactions (Yang et al 2019 ) that is further fortified with the coworking space ambience. The active mediation between the coworking users and achieving a shifting interplay of formal and informal relationships within the workspace can thus provide a basis for collective action (Blagoev et al 2019 ) and a sense of community (Garrett et al 2017 ).…”

“…The place experience both in physical and digital environment can be analysed by six characteristics of the experience: atmosphere, time rhythm, functionality, ease of use, narrative and meaning of the place (Nenonen and Kojo, 2013;Tähtinen et al, 2016). Orel and Almeida (2019) stated that the factors of spatial design need to be adapted, and engagement strategies need to be constructed to maximise the preferential output in co-working places. The factors of spatial comfortability are an essential predisposition for workspace users to engage in cooperation with each other.…”
