The American Board of Radiology perspective on maintenance of certification: Part IV: Practice quality improvement in radiologic physics

Abstract: Recent initiatives of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in the area of maintenance of certification (MOC) have been reflective of the response of the medical community to address public concerns regarding quality of care, medical error reduction, and patient safety. In March 2000, the 24 member boards of the ABMS representing all medical subspecialties in the USA agreed to initiate specialty-specific maintenance of certification (MOC) programs. The American Board of Radiology (ABR) MOC program f… Show more

“…The choice of PQI activities and projects are to meet the spirit of the definition of QI”. [ 10 , 14 ] Medical Physics embodies a wide range of clinical aspects and ABR has identified five possible PQI areas: safety of patients, employees and public, accuracy of analysis and calculation, report turnaround and communication issues, and practice guidelines and standards and surveys. [ 10 ] In addition, the diplomate must demonstrate a commitment to maintaining competency as a radiologic physicist.…”

“…To improve quality patient care, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), mandated in March of 2000 that each member board initiate specialty specific Maintenance of Certification (MOC). Diplomates are no longer granted lifetime certification but need to provide evidence of learning and quality improvement 1 . The American Board of Radiology's MOC was launched in 2007 and in 2016, part 4; practice quality improvement (PQI) was revised to both recognize and credit the many ways in which its diplomates contribute to improving quality and safety 2 .…”

“…q RSNA, 2012 T he Institute of Medicine and other professional and consumer organizations have long called for health care providers to implement quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving the quality and safety of medical care (1). This imperative applies equally to the practice of radiology, where education about and experience with practice quality improvement programs are required components of the American Board of Radiology's maintenance of certification program (2)(3)(4)(5). An essential element of any practice quality improvement project includes the selection of appropriate metrics and collection of baseline data (6).…”
