Astyanax eremus, a new species of geographically isolated characid fish, is described from a small tributary of the upper rio Iguaçu basin. The new species belongs to the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex and is easily distinguished from its congeners included in this group by its allometric growth of the mouth, which goes from terminal in young individuals to subterminal mouth in larger specimens. Additionally, the new species is distinguished by meristic and morphometric characters. Astyanax eremus presents an evident polymorphism on the traditional character "number of teeth in inner premaxillary row". Comments about that character are provided.Astyanax eremus, uma espécie nova de caracídeo geograficamente isolada, é descrita de um pequeno tributário da bacia do alto rio Iguaçu. A espécie nova pertence ao complexo de espécies Astyanax scabripinnis e é facilmente distinguível dos congêneres deste grupo por apresentar desenvolvimento alométrico da boca, a qual passa de terminal nos indivíduos jovens a subterminal nos maiores. Além disso, a espécie nova é diagnosticada por caracteres merísticos e morfométricos. Astyanax eremus apresenta um acentuado polimorfismo do tradicional caráter "número de dentes da série interna do pré-maxilar". Uma discussão a respeito deste caráter é apresentada.

SynopsisThe feeding ecology of three characids ( A . fasciatus, A. bimaculatus and A. schubarti) was studied monthly during 1988 in Lake Inferngo, a major floodplain lake of the Mogi-Guaqu River in the State of SBo Paulo. River flooding directly influenced the diet of the omnivorous A. bimaculatus and A. fasciatus which responded to maximum inundation (March) by consuming predominantly allochthonous insects. In contrast, A. schubarti was less influenced by the river flood cycle on qualitative changes in diet and relied basically on aquatic macrophytes and periphytic algae. The importance of zooplankton in the diet of the three species was low, and may be attributed to its low density in the water column (< 1 ind 1.'). Ontogenetic diet changes were evident for the three species. For A. fasciatus and A. birnaculatus the importance of zooplankton was high at the early stages, decreasing with size. A. schubarti at younger stages consumed diversified items which gradually decreased quantitatively up to the size class of 65 mm; from this size onwards, the diet became restricted to the consumption of periphytic algae and macrophytes.

Molecular cytogenetics of Astyanax ribeirae (Teleostei, Characidae), an endemic characin of the Atlantic rainforest

Astyanax ribeirae is a characin fish endemic to Ribeira de Iguape river basin, Brazil. Karyotypic analysis of the specimen from distinct geographic regions depicted similar karyotypic features, i.e. 2n=50 constituting the 4 M+10SM+ 6ST+30A and a fundamental number (FN) equal to 70. Further analysis on linear differentiation using silver nitrate staining, c-banding and rDNA localization revealed single NOR on ST/A chromosomes, heterochromatin blocks in the pericentromeric region of some chromosomes, and four 18S rDNA sites and six 5S rDNA sites, all located on ST/A chromosomes. FISH with As-51 satellite DNA probe presented no homology signals in chromosomes of A. ribeirae, indicating uniqueness of species within the genus Astyanax. The chromosomal and molecular cytogenetic data obtained on A. ribeirae specimens collected from Atlantic rainforest areas are discussed to elucidate relationship between this species and other species in the genus vis-à-vis chromosomal evolution of the group. This is the first report on cytogenetic analysis of Astyanax ribeirae.
