Abstract: The Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) of the American Psychological Association was founded in 1973 in response to the report of the Task Force on the Status of Women in Psychology. In this article, we set the context for the founding of the task force and committee and briefly describe the history of feminist critique of, and activism within, organized psychology in the United States. From its inception to the present day, CWP has been known as an activist group. We review some of the major contributions… Show more

“…Like the 1995 report, this report is grounded in roots of social justice. The Committee on Women in Psychology was created following substantial efforts in the late 1960s and early 1970s by APA foremothers outraged at blatant injustices against women in APA (APA, 1995;Chrisler et al, 2013). The committee was to function as a catalyst by means of interacting with and making recommendations to the various parts of APA's governing structure (Russo & Denmark, 1987).…”

“…The goals of the committee were to (a) promote the health and well-being of all women and girls, nationally and internationally; (b) identify and eliminate discriminatory and exploitive practices against all women and girls, nationally and internationally; (c) promote the unique contributions of women to psychology; (d) enhance women's leadership within and outside APA; (e) monitor activities of groups within APA to assess the impact on women; (f) collaborate with others as needed to achieve the empowerment of underrepresented groups; and (g) promote advocacy on public policy relevant to women, nationally and internationally. CWP has a long-standing focus on eliminating inequities in many areas addressed in this report, including inequity in education, hiring, compensating, evaluating, and promoting women; ensuring equitable opportunities for publication of scientific articles about women; and representation of women in leadership and honorable roles, including as decision makers, journal editors, APA Fellows, and award winners (Chrisler et al, 2013).…”
