The analysis of shimmy instability of a typical nose landing gear using active torsional magneto-rheological damper

Abstract: Shimmy is an oscillation in the nose landing gear (NLG) of an aircraft that may occur during taxiing, take-off or landing. Increasing emphasis on reducing the weight of landing gear systems in modern aircraft has, in many cases, induced shimmy problems and active vibration control has gradually been used to suppress vibration. The objective of the current investigation is to introduce an active torsional magneto-rheological (MR) fluid-based damper for shimmy vibration control of a typical NLG. In the present s… Show more

“…Regarding caster angle and damping, our model follows the same tendencies as presented in the literature of Wei and Jiang 12 and Sateesh and Maiti: 17 shimmy already appears at small values of the caster angle while the damping helps to reduce shimmy vibrations. Note that an improved modelling of damping may require the inclusion of dry friction.…”

“…Semi-active control of landing gear shimmy is investigated by Dawei et al (2010). A torsional MR damper has been applied to shimmy vibration control of a nose landing gear by Sateesh and Maiti (2009) and the effects of various parameters on shimmy behavior have been examined. A skyhook controller is applied to a landing gear system with an MR damper for attenuating undesired shock and vibration during landing and taxiing by Lee et al (2009).…”

“…A closed-loop shimmy damper has been examined using root locus plots for use with a hydraulic steering system based on Moreland's point contact model [17] . By using another closed-loop feedback control scheme based on the formulation as presented by Li, an active torsional magneto-rheological fluid-based damper has also been tested [18] . Predictive control is another type of anti-shimmy device for the model set out by Somieski [19] .…”
