The Analysis of Stone Tool Procurement, Production, and Maintenance

Abstract: Researchers who analyze stone tools and their production debris have made significant progress in understanding the relationship between stone tools and human organizational strategies. Stone tools are understood to be morphologically dynamic throughout their use-lives; the ever-changing morphology of stone tools is intimately associated with the needs of tool users. It also has become apparent to researchers that interpretations of lithic analysis are more productive when the unique contexts and situations fo… Show more

“…By devising a sequence of procedures, we entered the system of modern lithic organization, as it is defined by William Andrefsky, which was the greatest result in our approach (Andrefsky 2009). It turned out that the realization of the experiment implied a far wider framework of preparation and observation, thus coming closer to the poorly visible boundary between objective state and subjective estimate, an eternal dilemma and the moving question in archaeology.…”

“…Another possible indicator of secondary deposition of chert artifacts is the near absence of refits in the assemblage (Andrefsky, 2009;Morrow, 1996). We tried to rearticulate flakes to bifaces and cores, as well as to other flakes that may have been involved in the same reduction process.…”
