The annual cycles of CO2 and H2O exchange over a northern mixed forest as observed from a very tall tower

Abstract: We present the annual patterns of net ecosystem‐atmosphere exchange (NEE) of CO2 and H2O observed from a 447 m tall tower sited within a mixed forest in northern Wisconsin, USA. The methodology for determining NEE from eddy‐covariance flux measurements at 30, 122 and 396 m above the ground, and from CO2 mixing ratio measurements at 11, 30, 76, 122, 244 and 396 m is described. The annual cycle of CO2 mixing ratio in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is also discussed, and the influences of local NEE and larg… Show more

“…High-precision, high-accuracy CO 2 mixing ratio measurements are simultaneously recorded at 30, 122, and 396 m using Li-COR model LI-6251and LI-7000 infrared gas analyzers (Bakwin et al, 1998;Zhao et al, 1997). These measurements are used to calibrate the fast-response infrared gas analyzers and to calculate the rate of change of storage for CO 2 (Davis et al, 2003). The eddy covariance instrumentation and methodology is described in detail in Berger et al (2001) and Davis et al (2003).…”

“…[22] The data used for this study were collected as part of the Chequamegon Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (ChEAS) [Bakwin et al, 1998;Davis et al, 2003], a collaborative research effort that maintains multiple data collection sites located in and around the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Northern Wisconsin, USA. Nearly all of the data, with the exceptions noted below, are from two of the above sites, viz., the Willow Creek site [Cook et al, 2004;Desai et al, 2005] and the Hay Creek site [Ewers et al, 2002[Ewers et al, , 2007a[Ewers et al, , 2007b.…”

“…However, neither the processes controlling nor the locations of the sources and sinks of this greenhouse gas are understood (Davis et al, 2003). CO 2 inversion studies, which seek to estimate the magnitude and location of CO 2 fluxes, are negatively impacted by PBL depth uncertainty (Gurney et al, 2002;Gerbig et al, 2003;Baker et al, 2006) and this introduces uncertainty into estimates of global climate change.…”
