The annual diet of feral goats (Capra hircusL.) in lowland rimu-rata-kamahi forest on eastern Mount Taranaki (Mt Egmont)

Abstract: The diet of the feral goat (Capra hircus) in rimu-rata-kamahi forest on Mt Taranaki was examined over 1 year from monthly rumen samples. Seasonal changes in diet, relative plant preference ratings, and differential fragmentation and digestion rates of plant species, were measured.Individual rumens contained 19 plant species on average and sometimes more than 30. Two species, (Asplenium bulbiferum and Ripogonum scandens), made up 44.8% of the total volume eaten over the year.Foods which were eaten in significan… Show more

“…More grass was eaten in spring (8%) compared with summer (3%). The diet of chamois in Westland's forests is similar to that of feral goats (e.g., Mitchell et al 1987), white-tailed deer (Nugent & Challies 1988) and red deer (Nugent et al in press) in mixed podocarp-hardwood forests elsewhere in New Zealand.…”

“…Sixty four percent of the animals sampled were 2 years old or younger; kidney fat indices of males (condition scores) averaged 60, 7.4% were greater than 120, and some exceeded 180; and 77% of the pregnancies were multiple (Mitchell 1985). Therefore, the sampled goats were predominantly young animals in good condition which appeared to have a high reproductive rate.…”

“…The seven species and their contribution to the annual diet were: Asplenium bulbiferum (31.2%); Coprosma grandifolia (5.0%); C. lucida (1.7%); Melicytus ramiflorus (4.9%); Ripogonum scandens (3.0%); SchejJlera digitata (5.7%); and Weinmannia racemosa(9.4%). The diet study (Mitchell et al 1987) showed that these species were all preferred foods which in total made up about 61% of the goats' intake. Another seven foods made up about 26% of the diet and 57 minor components accounted for the remaining 13% of what was eaten.…”
