The anti-cancer activity of green tea, coffee and cocoa extracts on human cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells depends on both pro-oxidant and anti-proliferative activities of polyphenols

Abstract: Thein vitroanti-cervical cancer potency of tested polyphenol extracts is exhibited in the following order: green tea > coffee > cocoa, with only green tea showing both pro-oxidative and anti-proliferative action.

“…This weakening, on one hand, is caused the heterogeneous dispersion of oxygen scavenger under high content. On the other hand, a pro-oxidative character which has been observed in previous studies [33,34] Figure 5 shows the OS values of the oxygen scavenging film with different oxygen scavenger contents. The OS values at oxygen scavenger content of 1%, 3% and 5% are 0.0044 mol/m 2 , 0.0095 mol/m 2 and 0.0150 mol/m 2 respectively.…”

“…EGCG is not only a natural antioxidant agent in normal cells but also exhibits prooxidant and apoptosis-inducing properties in cancer cells [ 86 , 87 ]. High concentrations of EGCG (50 μg to 200 μg gallic acid equivalents GAE/mL) induced formation of intracellular superoxide anion radical, H 2 O 2 and hydroxyl radical, as a consequence of increasing oxidative stress in HeLa cells [ 88 ]. High-concentration (100 μg gallic acid equivalents GAE/mL) green tea induced the formation of intracellular ROS and inhibited the activity of catalase, while increasing the production of superoxide anion radicals and reducing glutathione.…”

“…EGCG can induce non-apoptotic cell death through LMP in cervical cancer cells. But the potential mechanism of cervical cancer cell death through upregulating ROS formation has not been certified in HeLa cells [ 88 ]. There is only one study focused on the potency of tea components in lysosome-associated cell death pathways [ 121 ].…”

“…[ 36 ] Cocoa polyphenols are associated with many medicinal properties such as antiangiogenic,[ 37 ] cardioprotective,[ 38 ] cosmetic,[ 39 ] anti-inflammatory,[ 40 ] and anticancer. [ 41 ] Dutching or alkalization of naturally obtained cocoa powder leads to a loss in the polyphenol content. [ 42 ] Therefore, non alkalized cocoa powder was used as source material to successfully extract and enrich procyanidin group of compounds, which are polymeric condensation products of catechins (flavan-3-ols).…”
