Influence of novel ammonium-modified zinc-free phosphate nanofillers on anticorrosive features of primer-less polyurethane top-coating compositions

Anticorrosive polyurethane coating compositions were compounded using novel zinc-free nanosized phosphates: aluminum ammonium phosphates (AAP) or calcium aluminum ammonium phosphates (CAAP). For comparison, a nanosized strontium phosphate (SP), AAP/SP mixtures, and a microsized zinc phosphate (ZP) were tested. Paints containing ammonium-modified phosphates exhibited similar or a slightly higher viscosity than systems with SP or ZP. Nevertheless, coatings with the AAP or CAAP reached significantly better gloss and adhesion to a steel substrate as well as a slightly higher hardness. Results of a salt spray test showed that anticorrosive properties of the coatings containing AAP/SP mixtures were markedly better in relation to the systems containing solely AAP, CAAP, SP, or ZP. Electrochemical tests revealed the best barrier/anticorrosive features for AAP (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization) or SP and CAAP (a novel electrochemical noise technique).

Improvement Mechanism of Corrosion Resistance in a High‐Efficiency Binary Composite Rust Conversion Agent with Chelate Properties

In this study, the rust conversion coating that acts directly on the surface of rust layer, was studied from the preparation of rust conversion agents gallic acid (GA), 2‐hydroxyphosphonyl acetic acid (HPAA), and their compound (GA/HPAA), rust conversion effect and anticorrosive mechanism. Results show that 1) when GA and HPAA were combined to form GA/HPAA with a mass ratio of 2:1, the strengthening effect of rust conversion was observed, and a more complete, dense, and smooth covering film was generated on the rust surface. In this case, the corrosion current of GA/HPAA was reduced to 4.10 × 10−7 A cm−2, while the GA was 2.35 × 10−6 A cm−2 and HPAA was 2.16 × 10−6 A cm−2. 2) The mechanism of rust conversion and corrosion resistance can be expressed as that the chelation reaction can occur between the rust and rust conversion agent, which can generate new coordination covalent bonds O–Fe–O, P–O–Fe, and C–Fe–O. In this case, they can firmly lock the rust and prevent it from spreading further. Meanwhile, a highly cross‐linked dense anticorrosion protective film can be formed. Due to the presence of these chelating products, they can act as obstacles, prolonging the diffusion path of corrosive medium and slowing down the interaction with the metal matrix.

This article is a contribution to the development of the smart, self-healing solutions in the context of corrosion protection of metallic materials based on nanotechnology. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and loaded with two different corrosion inhibitors, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole and 8hydroxyquinoline. Loaded particles were embedded in different concentrations in waterborne epoxy coating, and as such applied to low carbon steel substrates. A continuous immersion test in 3.5% NaCl solution, humidity chamber exposure, and salt spray exposure were performed. Successful synthesis of silica nanoparticles has been demonstrated using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterization techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the loading of inhibitors, while the quantity of loaded inhibitors was determined by thermogravimetric method. Anticorrosive performance of intact composite coatings was determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and open-circuit potential measurements. Adhesive properties were determined using the pull-off test (ISO 4624). Significant improvement in corrosion protection performance has been demonstrated for coatings containing inhibitor-loaded nanoparticles.
