The anti-inflammatory activity of licorice, a widely used Chinese herb

Abstract: Licorice and its natural compounds have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activities. More pharmacokinetic studies using different models with different dosages should be carried out, and the maximum tolerated dose is also critical for clinical use of licorice extract and purified compounds.

“…DNA authentication, combined with chemometric analyses of major flavanones and chalcones, enabled the characterization of mixtures, hybrids, and species outliers (Simmler et al, ; Song et al, ). In pharmacological and clinical studies, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma had several pharmacological properties including antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties (Chen, Li, & Gu, ; Hosseinzadeh & Nassiri‐Asl, ; Yang, Yuan, Ma, Zhou, & Liu, ). Glycyrrhetinic acid markedly upregulated the activities of the antioxidant enzymes and increased the content of skin collagen, whereas it obviously downregulated the expression of inflammatory cytokines in vitro (Kong et al, ).…”

“…The decreased GSH levels are the main cause of increased oxidative stress in dementia [78,79]. Glycyrrhiza extract activity on oxidative stress may be associated with the isoliquiritigenin effect on the function of mitochondria [80]. Glycyrrhiza acts by decreasing oxidative stress related to different types of dementia types by reducing brain cell damage, enhancing nerve cell function, and inhibiting memory weakness [81].…”

“…Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch is one of the oldest and most popular herbal medicines in the world, and recorded in the pharmacopoeias of many Asian and European countries. It shows a variety of pharmacological activities, including anticancer, antiulceric, antiinflammatory, antioxidative, antiviral, hepatoprotective, expectorant, and memory enhancing activities (Asl & Hosseinzadeh, ; Woo, Hwang, Noh, & Jeong, ; Yang, Yuan, Ma, Zhou, & Liu, ). Among the bioactive compounds, triterpene saponins and flavonoids are believed to be responsible for the bioactivities (Zhang & Ye, ).…”
