The Antibiofilm Effect of a Medical Device Containing TIAB on Microorganisms Associated with Surgical Site Infection

Abstract: Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent the most common nosocomial infections, and surgical sutures are optimal surfaces for bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., and Escherichia coli are the most commonly isolated microorganisms. The aim of this research was to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of a medical device (MD) containing TIAB, which is a silver-nanotech patented product. The antibacterial effect was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Ente… Show more

“…Wound infections are associated with morbidity and mortality in patients, especially in developing countries, regardless by the type of wound [5,6,8]. Failure in the treatment implies an increase in the healthcare costs, since they involve a prolonged hospitalization due to diagnostic tests, a huge administration of antibiotics and, sometimes, invasive surgery [9].…”

“…Among all types of nanoparticles developed and characterized, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) gained strong attention due to their inherent characteristic of acting as an antimicrobial agent even in solid state. AgNPs showed a strong antimicrobial activity against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms as well as an antibiofilm effect ( Sondi and Salopek-Sondi, 2004 ; Jain et al, 2009 ; Puca et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Finally, the antibiofilm activity was demonstrated with Live/Dead staining followed by fluorescence microscope analysis. The biofilms developed in 35 mm Petri dishes were stained with Live/Dead™ BacLight™ Bacterial Viability Kit (Life Technologies Carlsbad, CA, USA) as previously reported [ 68 ] and immediately visualized at the fluorescence microscope.…”
