The antidepressant-like effect of trans-astaxanthin involves the serotonergic system

Abstract: The antidepressant-like effect of trans-astaxanthin, a compound present rich in algae, was evaluated through behavioral and neurochemical methods. Results showed that trans-astaxanthin treatment significantly decreased the immobility time in force swim test and tail suspension test, but did not influence locomotor activity. Trans-astaxanthin treatment did not effectively antagonize hypothermia and ptosis induced by reserpine. However, pre-treatment with para-chlorophenylalanine abolished the anti-immobility ef… Show more

“…Haematococcus pluvialis is a unicellular freshwater microalga that is rich in astaxanthin. The red ketocarotenoid astaxanthin (3,30-dihydroxy-β,β-carotene-4,40-dione) is the most powerful biological antioxidant and is highly demanded in health care and aquaculture, with the latest research showing that astaxanthin may play roles in anti-depression and preventing UVA-induced skin photoaging [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Astaxanthin is a 40-carbon isoprenoid and is synthesized from isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP).…”

“…Rutin isolated from Schinus molle L. appeared to exhibit antidepressant-like effect in mice, probably through enhanced availability of 5-HT and NE in the synaptic cleft [ 37 ]. Mice treated with taraxanthin showed antidepressant-like effect through the involvement of 5-HT system [ 38 ]. In short, most of the chemicals are exhibiting same mechanism of action as exhibited by generally used antidepressants that work either as selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants or MAO.…”

“…The forced swimming test (FST) was performed according to previous research (Jiang et al, 2017b). Each mouse was placed in the glass cylinder (height: 30 cm; diameter: 10 cm; containing 20 cm depth of water with a temperature of 24 ± 1 • C) for 6 min.…”
