The Antioxidant and Antigenotoxic Potential of Peltigera Canina and Umbilicaria Nylanderiana Based on Their Phenolic Profile

Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the biological effects of methanol and water extracts obtained from Peltigera canina and Umbilicaria nylanderiana on human peripheral lymphocytes. Chromosome aberration and micronucleus tests evaluated genotoxicity levels of the extracts on the cells. In both tests, it was determined that the treatments at concentrations of 1 -50 mg/L did not significantly increase genotoxicity. When investigating the total oxidative stress (TOS) levels of the cells exposed to the tested extra… Show more

“…The absorbance of the supernatant was read at λ = 540 nm. The percentage of haemolysis was determined using the following formula: Haemolysis% = (Abscontrol/Abssample) × 100, Reducing power assay The presence of antioxidants in the extracts resulted in reduction of the ferric cyanide complex (Fe 3+ ) to the ferrous cyanide form (Fe 2+ ) [15]. A volume of 0.5 mL of the different concentrations (0.01 -0.1 mg/mL) of the extract was added to 1.25 mL of a phosphate buffer (0.2 M, pH 6.6) mixed with 1.25 mL of potassium ferricyanide (1%).…”

“…DPPH Radical Scavenging Activity. DPPH • (1,1diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazil) radical scavenging activity is one of the most frequently used methods in studies carried out for determining the antioxidant activity [5]. It is based on colour phase alternation in purple formed by DPPH • with the interaction of antioxidants and radicals after which absorbance value decreases.…”
