The antiproton decelerator: AD

Abstract: A simplified scheme for the provision of antiprotons at 100 MeV/c based on fast extraction is described. The scheme uses the existing p production target area and the modified Antiproton Collector Ring in their current location. The physics programme is largely based on capturing and storing antiprotons in Penning traps for the production and spectroscopy of antihydrogen. The machine modifications necessary to deliver batches of 1 u 10 7 p /min at 100 MeV/c are described. Details of the machine layout and the … Show more

“…The beam emittance is expected to be larger than the nominal value quoted in [5], with a minimum value of ' 1:5 mm mrad, owing to rest-gas scattering at the nal momentum of 100 MeV/c. Furthermore, due to variations of the elements in the AD and its transport lines between di erent extractions, the area in phase-space covered by the beam over several shots will belarger than the true emittance.…”

“…The results presented in Baird et al reveal a recommendation, that in order to limit the amount of shielding, access to the area during operation with protons is not allowed. [14]. The vehicle was designed to ensure all the handling operations, such as handling of the magnets or exchanging targets at the AD target area.…”

“…The control system was a great help during the commissioning phase, but it is still at an early stage of evolution towards the high degree of automation [1] required for routine operation. Although the 'philosophy' is well established, a lot of application programs remain to be developed.…”
