The antiviral and antimicrobial activities of licorice, a widely-used Chinese herb

Abstract: Licorice is a common herb which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. More than 20 triterpenoids and nearly 300 flavonoids have been isolated from licorice. Recent studies have shown that these metabolites possess many pharmacological activities, such as antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and other activities. This paper provides a summary of the antiviral and antimicrobial activities of licorice. The active components and the possible mechanisms for these activities … Show more

“…NF-κBp65 is predominant in the apoptotic regulation process by regulating the expression of downstream Bcl-2 genes. Bax participates in apoptotic responses via intrinsic mitochondrial-dependent signaling by inducing the release of cytochrome c (23,(43)(44)(45). Another cell death protease is caspase-3, which serves a role in cell apoptosis.…”

“…Beclin 1 is an autophagy activator that was shown to inhibit the replication of HSV-1 27. Laconi et al also showed that when glycyrrhizin was added to HeLa cells concurrently with HSV-1, glycyrrhizin had a strong anti-HSV-1 effect, whereas rapamycin did not.…”
