“…More to the point, as Brian Murdoch has shown in a brilliant study, 39 the Latin Life of Adam and Eve also circulated widely in medieval Europe, and was repeatedly translated into many European vernaculars. Just to skim the surface of Murdoch's rich survey: the Life (including the envy account) had been rendered into Irish in the tenth century, in the Saltair na Rann [Psalter of Quatrains] 40 ; it appears in a Middle German poem, four manuscripts of which survive from the fourteenth century 41 ; and, most importantly for our purposes, it appears in the Middle English "Auchinleck" manuscript, dated to the early fourteenth century. 42 The Auchinleck Life of Adam and Eve develops the Latin Vita in a number of interesting ways, most importantly in its explicit inclusion of Jesus himself in its plotline: in this text, as in the Latin Vita, Satan objects to honoring © 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Adam on the grounds of his priority ('I was before the world began/Ere ever God did make man .…”
