This article examines the responses of Australian historian Austin Gough (1926–1997) to the moral and intellectual changes in the academy after 1968 as well as their consequences in the broader society as student radicals attained maturity and obtained positions of power in Australia's Labor government from 1983 to 1996. An erudite conservative with a matchless flair for polemics and a taste for controversy, Gough's critiques from 1960 to 1997 are also a chronicle of a crisis in the West as cultural relativism and identitarian perspectives undermined traditional certainties and their foundation in Enlightenment ideas. His experience also challenges our notion of the role and authority of the intellectual in public life at the end of the twentieth century, one hundred years after the intellectual first took center stage during France's Dreyfus Affair.
