The Aqueous Crude Extracts of Montanoa frutescens and Montanoa grandiflora Reduce Immobility Faster Than Fluoxetine Through GABAA Receptors in Rats Forced to Swim

Abstract: Background. Montanoa frutescens and Montanoa grandiflora have been indistinctly used for centuries in traditional Mexican medicine for reproductive impairments, anxiety, and mood disorders. Preclinical studies support their aphrodisiac and anxiolytic properties, but their effects on mood are still unexplored.Methods.The effects of 25 and 50 mg/kg of M frutescens and M grandiflora extracts were evaluated on days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of treatment, and compared with fluoxetine (1 mg/kg) and Remotiv (7.14 mg/kg) i… Show more

“…), and some metabolites from plants (Wistar rats: single doses of 1 mg/kg chrysin, i.p., Swiss albino mice: 50 and 100 mg/kg/1-21-days polyphenols, p.o.) (Lozano-Hernández et al, 2010;Rodríguez-Landa et al, 2018Amaghnouje et al, 2020a,b) significantly reduced TTI and, some of them, increased LI. Therefore, the measurement of LI, in addition to TTI, may improve the detection of antidepressant-like activity in the FST (Castagné et al, 2009).…”

“…The results are consistent with the previous studies that repeated administrations of FLX improve certain aspects of depression-like behavior and hippocampal functions ( David et al, 2009 ; Siopi et al, 2016 ). It has been shown that 21-day treatment with fluoxetine at 1 mg/kg reduce the immobility in the FST ( Contreras et al, 2001 ; Rodriguez-Landa et al, 2018 ). The behaviors such as sucrose preference and immobility in FST improved more quickly may account for using a relatively high dose of FLX in the present experiment.…”

“…The FST was originally described by Elhwuegi [14] and is one of the most widely used pharmacological tests for assessing antidepressant-like activity [15]. The animal is maintained in a rectangular pool (50 × 30 × 60 cm), filled to a 25 cm depth with water at room temperature at 22-25 • C [16]. The test is based on the assumption that the animal will swim actively in order to escape from stressful stimuli.…”
