The Arecibo Legacy Fast Alfa Survey: The Galaxy Population Detected by Alfalfa

Abstract: Making use of HI 21 cm line measurements from the ALFALFA survey (α.40) and photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and GALEX, we investigate the global scaling relations and fundamental planes linking stars and gas for a sample of 9417 common galaxies: the α.40-SDSS-GALEX sample. In addition to their HI properties derived from the ALFALFA dataset, stellar masses (M * ) and star formation rates (SFRs) are derived from fitting the UV-optical spectral energy distributions. 96% of the α.40-SDSS-GALEX … Show more

“…In the low-mass regime ( 10 8 M ), the atomic component becomes increasingly important, with observations of nearby star-forming systems finding that the typical HI gas fraction increases steadily towards lower mass (Skillman, Côté & Miller 2003;Geha et al 2006;Leroy et al 2008;Schiminovich et al 2010;Catinella et al 2010;Huang et al 2012a). More importantly, this relative growth in atomic gas outpaces the corresponding increase in the average specific star formation rate (e.g.…”

“…Galaxies 1 and 2 have H I gas fractions comparable to that of the normal H I galaxies, while Galaxy 3 is below the ALFALFA scaling relation (see Figure 2(c) of Huang et al 2012). In addition, Galaxy 1 and Galaxy 2 were also observed in CO (2-1) with JCMT (PI: Ting Xiao) and CO (1-0) with IRAM (Saintonge et al 2012), respectively, from which the total H 2 mass can be derived.…”

“…The blue line in Figure 3a is the stacked average of the galaxies that are detected in ALFALFA. The average gas fraction data points for each relation are given in Table 1. will overestimate the average gas content of galaxies within the volume (see Figure 2 in Huang et al 2012).…”
